I am currently reading through the Great Books of the Western World 10 year reading plan.
My posts are organized in the following manner:
Years 1 – 3
1) Summary of the reading selection in bullet points
2) Interesting quotations
3) My thoughts upon the reading selection
Years 4 – 10
1) Brief reflections upon the reading selection
2) Interesting quotations
I manage another blog, which can be found here: orwell1627.wordpress.com
I’m intrigued.
I admire the attempt. It is something I would try to do, but fail at. Will you try any books from the East?
What a wonderful undertaking! And so disciplined! I too, am constantly reading but I’m afraid not in such order. Just yesterday I was asked by my husband how many books I am reading at the moment…? I honestly couldn’t say. That’s my style though- to bounce around and I enjoy it. But I have to confess to a certain amount of envy at your detailed TEN year plan! WOW! Have you considered looking at the artworks that were inspired by these works? They are everywhere and it would enhance the whole experience. Probably the best way to go would simply be to get a basic art history book. Just consider Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel (he committed a whole ginormaous wall to Judgement day)
Have a nice day
Emily
Thank you for introducing me to your impressive goal. I will be happy to check back and learn from your gleanings!
I´m a little history buff, so I found this blog quite of interest for me. By the way in my humble opinion more people in the U.S should learn the declaration of Independence, and this is a Spanish guy talking but lived in the U.S for half my life so it´s a dear country to me with an incredible history. Love it more than my own countries history.
Good Luck on your reading plan. 🙂
That soft tree crown and the water – oh – would you have a link to it? so peaceful! Pleasure to visit your blog – a beautiful mix of beauty, art and science, it seems to me
I’m not sure which picture you are referring to…
I have no idea, I am sorry 🙂
This sounds to me like a delightful and challenging adventure. An unexamined life is impoverished as is an unexamined culture. Will you be examining the cultural and academic bias you bring to these books? I guess that might necessitate extending your programme even further. Nevertheless I will be interested in your selection and in your evaluations too. Have a good journey.
It amazes me that you have taken upon such a daring challenge. Best of luck and I will be checking your post. 🙂
Thanks! Glad to have you on board!
Orwell one of my heroes have you read “why Orwell matters?
Great book by a great essayist
I love Hitchens! I have watched that video, but I have not read the book. It’s something that I certainly need to do. Thanks for the suggestion 🙂
He is just the most fantastically charismatic orator of rhetoric and logic. So many hours of hitch on you tube . He is just great
I’m attempting the same plan, but I don’t think I’m going to manage it in only ten years! Best of luck. I look forward to following your progress.
Best of luck to you too Jeff! You might be surprised about how fast you read through some of these books – they’re fascinating.
Ambitious, I like that. Is there a book list? I didn’t see one. We’ve read same or similar titles this past year. I was just curious more than anything. I suppose we have that in common also.
Yes, the book list can be found by clicking the “Reading Plan” tab.
We do seem to have a lot in common 🙂
I understand you will most likely not see this. But I want to tell you, in the off chance that you log in, that you have inspired me as much as my best professors at the Air Force Academy where I attend school. I have started my own blog where I plan on posting snippets that I find fascinating from whatever I read and now that I can see your reading list I think I have a good idea of what I’ll be reading. Thank you so much for everything and I hope to contribute to “the Great Conversation”
Thank you for the kind words. I am merely an intermediary who tries to connect people to the ideas communicated in these texts. Happy reading!
Wow, great idea. Bet you don’t have time for anything other than reading!

Some deep thoughts here!
I am so impressed and inspired by your blog, both of them. It’s always wonderful to be able to follow someone on such an enriching journey.
Thank you for sharing my work!
Thanks for all your postings. I am also working my way through the GBWW 10-Year Reading Plan, at this point hoping to complete Year 1 thi summer, 3 years since I started. Better slow than not at all!
Good luck!
